I just bought a cast iron skillet, but ….?
it has rust on it? I thought these molds were good forever. I Bought a young Amish for 50 cents. Is there a way I can season it and get rid of rust? I am so tired of using other pans that stick all the time and the coating comes off and I know it's supposed to be dangerous for you. Can anyone help?
No worries, these mussels are good forever, but you get the rust and Reseason. Just give it a good going over with steel wool to get any loose rust and gunk out of it. Give him a very good scrub with warm water and a pair of skates SOS. This will be the last time you Never use soap on the pan, never! The natural non stick coating on cast iron pans are made of pure carbon, and dish soap disolve carbon if never again. Dry the pan thoroughly, not only with a towel, place it on the stove or in a hot oven to make sure that you have cooked off any water. Now for Season again, you need some fat, Crisco or other vegetable shortening is the best. Oil Olive and others can become rancid, so they are to be avoided. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Start with a warm, not hot pan and give a good even coating of shortening. Then turn the pan upside down in the oven for at least an hour or two depending on the size the stove is. That smell is in the kitchen a little, in May if you want to open a window. Take place, let cool. Check your seasoning, How does it look? Is this good, and very dark and shiny? If not, you may need to repeat. Once you have your surface, you're ready to go, but you Enchance you can season your skillet the first time you use it. You do not do the day of the season, just store until you're ready. Whevever I get a new cast iron pan (often at garage sales, etc., just like you) after I season it, I make sure that the first thing I do is fry something in it .. It really helps to deepen and put the seasoning. It need not be complicated or involved, nothing could be simpler than a lot of tortilla chips house: Cut the tortillas into triangles, drop in hot oil for a few seconds until it turns around, delete. Not required, but it helps a lot. And remember, no soap! Simply clean your stove after cooking in very hot water and brush or cloth that is completely free soap. The minute of dishwashing liquid that hits Pan goodbye seasoning. And do not worry, this does not mean they are difficult to clean, while the otherwise. Make sure to dry thoroghly, any excess water leads to rust. I prefer dry heat as above, it actually works, is not an effort on my part and keep the rust away.
